  • Algal samples
    Started: 1994-08-01
    Ended: 1995-03-31

    Algal samples were collected between August 1994 and January 1995, and cell densities of 3 taxa were counted: Chamaesiphon sp., Lyngbya subtilits, and Synechocystis sp. as a baseline for diversity. Algal samples were also collected on 3 occasions during February and March 1995, using low light, high light and slow flow, fast flow treatments.

  • Measuring effects of light and flow

    The effect of a 300-450% difference in light and doubling of flow on periphyton was tested by collecting 100 or more stream rocks, removing periphyton and processing it for chlorophyll a and ash free dry mass.

  • Treatment effects on colonization
    Started: 1994-01-01
    Ended: 1994-04-05

    100 uncolonized clay tiles were added to each treatment and collected at the end of the experiment to determine the treatment effects on colonization.

  • Nutrient availability
    Started: 1994-02-04
    Ended: 1994-03-17

    Nutrient availability was determined using stream water samples analyzed for nitrate, ammonia, soluble reactive phosphorus, and total phosphorus.

  • Determination of periphyon limiting factor
    Started: 1995-01-05
    Ended: 2004-08-02

    Clay saucers filled with agar containing N, P, N & P or no nutrients were submerged in the stream for 2 months, then sampled for chlorophyll a and ash free dry mass to determine whether periphyon were nitrogen or phosphorus limited.
