Methods
The methods followed in the creation of the dataset, including description of field, laboratory and processing steps, and quality control procedures
Past Methods (No longer in use)
- Plot establishment
Started: 1993-01-13
Ended: 2013-12-31Two sets of paired plots were established, each pair consisting of a plot where snow was removed after each snowfall, and a plot where snow cover was left in place
- Soil temperature measurements
Started: 1993-01-13
Ended: 2013-12-31Soil temperature measured continuously at 4 depths: 2 cm above; 5, 15 and 30 cm below soil surface.
Instrumentation: 4-point thermocouples
- Temperature
Started: 1993-01-13
Ended: 2013-12-3115-minute averages of temperature captured by two datalogger schemes
Instrumentation: Campbell Scientific 21X datalogger; Analog-digital converter
Software: Turbo Pascal

Site Characteristics
The spatial extent of the dataset site coverage, and descriptions of the spatial extent and context for the data collection
- Site Description
Proctor Maple Research Center on the west slope of Mount Mansfield, on a 2% slope, adjacent to the Forest Canopy Tower, within the forest. Surrounding forest is intermediate-aged northern hardwood, with Lyman-Marlow association soil type.
