Methods
The methods followed in the creation of the dataset, including description of field, laboratory and processing steps, and quality control procedures
Current Methods
Sensitive species monitoring
Started: 1990-08-01Native plant species known to be senstive to ozone and reliable bioindicators of ozone injury, are monitored annually to determine the presence/absence of injury on up to 10 individuals per species.
Species monitored
Started: 1991-08-01Species monitored include milkweed, blackberry, black cherry and white ash.
Voucher specimens
Started: 1993-08-01Voucher specimens sent to regional expert for verification.
Species evaluation
Started: 1994-08-01Starting in 1994, 10 - 30 individuals of each species evaluated for the % of leaf area injured (amount) and severity of injury using a 5 scale rating system; and dogbane added as a bioindicator.
Started: 1995-08-01Pin cherry added as a bioindicator species in 1995.
Started: 1996-08-01Definition of amount of injury changed from % of leaf area to % of leaves with injury in 1996.
Ozone concentrations
One-hour average ozone concentrations recorded were obtained from the Vermont Air Pollution Control Agency.
Classification and rating of injured foliage
Classification/Rating methods of injured foliage: (1) A five class system- combines the percentage of injured leaves and the intensity of damage on the 10 most severely injured leaves. (2) An eight class system- rates 30 leaves on each of three terminal shoots from near the top of a tree, or the oldest 30 leaves on a smaller plant.
Past Methods (No longer in use)
- Individual condition
Started: 1994-08-01
Ended: 1995-08-31The location and type of injury recorded for each individual.
Dataset Fields
Detailed documentation of the fields comprising the dataset, including the type of measurement, units where applicable, and any controlled vocabularies or code lists present in the data
Field Name Caption Description Additional Information amount_maximum amount_maximum The maximum amount of injury for a given biological species at a hexagon equals the maximum value of all the injury amounts for that species. If there are no injured plants within the species, the maximum amount of injury for the species equals zero.

- Site Description
West slope of Mt. Mansfield, open field at Proctor Maple Research Center. Sampling done in areas not mowed during current year.
- Site Description
In 1999 added CASTNet air quality station site to represent the Lye Brook Wilderness Area. Large open field with moist soil. Plants present include: pin cherry, blackberry, black cherry.
