For example, profiles of variables such as temperature and oxygen were previewed and any gross outlying values were removed or averaged, and such changes were noted in the QAQC Notes document. Another example includes phytoplankton names. Taxonomic names often varied as a result of keys used, date of sampling and processing, and a wide variety of naming techniques when a taxon could not be identified but were rather described. For this reason, we attempted to standardize all taxa names to currently-accepted names in Algaebase.org. When original names were updated, the updates were noted in the QAQC Notes file, as well as in the species list dataset.
