Methods
The methods followed in the creation of the dataset, including description of field, laboratory and processing steps, and quality control procedures
Current Methods
Started: 2005-05-01The Tekran 2537 system measures mercury concentration using cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (CVAFS).
Instrumentation: Tekran 2537 analyzer; Tekran 1130 sampler; Tekran 1135 sampler; Campbell Scientific CR3000
Software: Tekran 2537 analyzer program; Campbell Scientific LoggerNet
Started: 2005-05-01During the first 2 hours of operation, the Tekran 2537 measures the concentration of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM). These measurements are made directly and are presented as 5-minute averages. Each average results from the operation (i.e. collection and analysis) of one of two cartridges that operate in alternating fashion.
Instrumentation: Tekran 2537 analyzer; Tekran 1130 sampler; Tekran 1135 sampler; Campbell Scientific CR3000
Software: Tekran 2537 analyzer program; Campbell Scientific LoggerNet
Quality Control Measures: As alternating cartridges are used for the measurements, cartridge bias is evaluated as part of data validation
Started: 2005-05-01Gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) and particulate-bound mercury of mean diameter less than or equal to 2.5 µm (PBM2.5) are adsorbed onto prepared glassware in the Tekran 1130/1135 speciation modules for two hours while simultaneously, the Tekran 2537A is analyzing gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) by drawing ambient air through the system.
Instrumentation: Tekran 2537 analyzer; Tekran 1130 sampler; Tekran 1135 sampler; Campbell Scientific CR3000
Software: Tekran 2537 analyzer program; Campbell Scientific LoggerNet
Started: 2005-05-01After this two hour period, the system desorbs the glassware by heating the glassware in the speciation modules until the PBM2.5 and GOM are converted to gaseous elemental mercury which can then be detected by the 2537A. During this desorption, the system pumps zero air through the speciation modules so that no ambient air (which could contain mercury) is in the system. After one hour of desorption, the system returns to detecting GEM in ambient air.

Instrument time was one hour advanced. Clock adjustment was at 1012EST. 2014-11-12 10:16:00 2014-11-07 00:00:00 2014-11-07 23:59:00 Changed out argon cylinder, soda-lime and filter pack on Tekran sample intake and zero air. Snowing out so 1130 sampling head was left as is until better weather. Next desorb will have about one extra hour of GOM accumulation. Regular sampling will resume at 1200. 2014-11-07 11:31:00 2014-10-09 00:00:00 2014-10-09 23:59:00 Changed out argn cylinder, soda lime and filter pack on Tekran system; changed out denuder, external glassware and sample line filter pack in 1130 sampling module. Restarted sampling to check on readings then idled so system it synches at top of hour.Denuder #4 up.Normal sampling will resume at 1600EDT. 2014-10-09 15:51:00 2014-10-01 00:00:00 2014-10-01 23:59:00 10-01-2014 MP- Lamp driver voltage indicator lit probably due to power interruption earlier today (0800 hr). Adjusted back to 9V, basline okay. Ran a calibration sampling resumed at 1300 EDT. 2014-10-01 12:44:00 2014-09-15 00:00:00 2014-09-15 23:59:00 Computer was off, restarted and resumed TekCap and Loggernet. Reset station clock to local time. Later- changed out argn cylinder, soda lime and filter pack on Tekran system; changed out denuder, external glassware and sample line and zero air filter packs in 1130 sampling module. Sampling restart was delayed because operator neglected to change tanks. Stopped 2537A and changed cylinders then restarted sampling to check on readings then idled so system synchs at top of hour. 2014-09-15 16:16:00 2014-08-27 00:00:00 2014-08-27 23:59:00 Adjusted lamp voltage from 14V back to 9V then adjusted offset from .09 to .12.Calibrated. Normal sampling will resume at 1200EDT. Next desorb will have four hours of GOM and PBM accumulation. 2014-08-27 11:22:00 2014-07-17 00:00:00 2014-07-17 23:59:00 Lamp voltage indicator lit so lamp voltage was adjusted back to ~9V. Re-calibrated instrument after voltage adjustment, normal sampling resumed at 1200. Mowing at site from ~1000 to noon. The mowing should have little mpact on mercury readings since the analyzer was idiled for calibration and waiting for the top of the hour. There are an extra 16 adsorb cycles in the 1400 to 1500 desorb, however. 2014-07-17 11:28:00 2014-06-16 00:00:00 2014-06-16 23:59:00 Mark Olsen from AMNet at site today. Worked on 2437A and replaced RPF in 1135 module. Site audit will be this coming Thursday. 2014-06-16 15:59:00 2014-04-29 00:00:00 2014-04-29 23:59:00 Computer was restarted after scheduled updates. Desorb looked bad; no difference from normal GEM sampling. Suspected power interruption to 1130 sampling module, moved plug to different outlet, seems OK now. First desorb after power interruption will have more adsorb, next one should be normal. 2014-04-29 10:46:00 2014-04-28 00:00:00 2014-04-28 23:59:00 Changed out argon, sodalime and filterpack on Tekran system; replaced denuder, external glassware and sample line filter in 1130 pump module. Idled system. 2014-04-03 16:23:00 2014-03-25 00:00:00 2014-03-25 23:59:00 Replaced pump diaphragm in the 1130 pump module then adjusted lamp voltage in 2537A. Re-calibrated; normal sampling resumed at 1500EST. 2014-03-26 10:27:00 2014-03-07 00:00:00 2014-03-13 00:00:00 3-07-2014 MP- Changed some parameters according to Mark Olsen's instructions. The 2537A was autocalibrating after each desorb. Changed round time from 5 to 60 minutes on 2537A instrument panel; changed calibration schedule from 8 to 24cycles on 1130 controller. Next sample time (displayed on 2537A screen) is correct. Will check back to make sure. 3-13-14 MP- Tekran schedule was good from 3-07-14 to 3-10-14 at 1300 then reverted to calibrating after each desorb. This is because operator found a setting on the front panel that allowed entering the time for next calibration but the Auto Cal function was not turned off. After conferring with program liaison on 3-12-14, operator was able to find the place where the auto cal could be set to no. System timing is O.K. today. 2014-03-13 14:00:00 2014-03-07 00:00:00 2014-03-07 23:59:00 Changed some parameters according to Marl Olsen's instructions.
