Project Overview
Cold-blooded stream organisms often cue in on sections of streams with cool (summer) or warm (winter) groundwater inputs to promote their growth, survival, and population persistence. However, scientists have little understanding of the distribution of groundwater seeps across river networks. This project will take both coarse- and fine-scale measurements of stream temperature to identify groundwater seeps, and statistically relate the location of these seeps to several candidate geomorphic variables.
Objectives
This research will improve our understanding of the availability of thermal refugia for aquatic organisms in Vermont streams.
