Project Overview
Tree cores were collected from five species of tree along an elevational gradient, replicated along three transects (watersheds) on Mt. Mansfield, VT. Note that these data and associated metadata have been archived on the DendroEcological Network located at www.uvm.edu/femc/dendro
Objectives
The objectives of this research were to examine relative growth rates of co-occurring tree species: red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.), sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), red maple (Acer rubrum L.), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton), and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.). We also aimed to examine how site factors (e.g., elevation, understory density and species composition, crown vigor), climate factors (e.g., temperature, precipitation, heat indicies), and atmospheric deposition (nitrogen and sulfur deposition) were related to tree growth over time.
