► Abstract
Photodocument human impact on Mount Mansfield alpine trails. Provide a baseline photographic database of disturbed alpine communities in the trailside zones of the Mount Mansfield Natural Area. Use this study and follow-up studies to examine the progress of alpine community recovery and assess the effectiveness of current management practices.

► Methods
- Past Methods (no longer in use)
- Transects
- Started: 2000-01-01
Ended: 2004-12-31 - Method Description: Four transects on Mount Mansfield's chin with 1.5X1.5m quadrats every 50 meters.
- Started: 2000-01-01
- Phototransect images
- Started: 2004-07-01
Ended: 2004-07-30 - Method Description: Phototransect images were standardized by using a 35mm camera, a stock 50 mm lens, a precise focal distance (5 meters), a constant aperature (16 or 22), and an in-photo reference scale (a yellow and black striped meter board). Camera to meter board compass bearings were recorded for each transect.
- Started: 2004-07-01
- Reference print
- Started: 2004-07-01
Ended: 2004-07-30 - Method Description: A second camera was used to capture an image of the entire photo point landscape- camera, tripod, meter board and all- generating a reference print for each site to be used in the field to ensure follow up photomonitoring images depict the same scene

► Site Characteristics
- Site Description: Twenty-four 5 meter phototransects and sixty-four 50 cm by 50 cm photoquadrats were subjectively sited in trampling-disturbed trailside sectors of the Mount Mansfield Natural Area. Selection criteria include site homogeneity, ease of access, and ability to accurately relocate sites for comparitive purposes. All transects and quadrats showed evidence of trampling induced vegitation and/or soil loss loss with disturbance levels ranging from light to extreme
