► Abstract
Establish baseline data on Carabid and Collembola populations in the planned silvicultural treatment units; study the relationship between these insect populations and soil characteristics. Test the use of ground dwelling Carabid and Collembola insects to monitor the impacts of forestry practices on the stability and long-term health of the soil habitat.

► Methods
- Current Methods
- Unnamed Method
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Method Description: Carabid, Collembola and soil sampling are within the planned silvicultural treatment units: seven, 2 ha. treatment units (six manipulations and a control) with a minimum of 50 meters between each unit.
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Treatment plans
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Method Description: The planned treatments include three commercial harvests: single-tree selection, shelterwood, and crop tree release; and three new techniques designed to enhance structural complexity of forests in escalating intensities. The treatements are planned for the winter of 2002-2003.
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Sample collection and processing
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Method Description: Nested within each unit are 4 sampling plots for both Carabid and Collembola sampling. Carabid sampling is conducted using pitfall traps, collected every 2 weeks through mid-October. Specimens are pinned, sorted and identified to species. Collembola sampling is conducted usiing soil cores taken monthly through mid-October. The insects are extracted from the soil using Berlese funnels. Specimens are preserved in ETOH for later identification to family and genus level.
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Soil sample collection and analysis
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Method Description: Soil samples collected in late summer will be analyzed by horizon for organic matter content, total organic nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and other micronutrients.
- Started: 2001-07-01
► Sampling Equipment
- Current Equipment
- Bulb planter
- Started: 2001-07-01
- Sampling Description: Collembola soil samples collected using a bulb planter. Carabid pitfall traps consist of 59-ml plastic cups placed within 355-ml plastic cups inserted below ground level.
► Site Characteristics
- Site Description: Stevensville Brook watershed on the Mount Mansfield State Forest. Mid-elevation northern harwood forest.
