dataset_eml_abstractheader

This is a low impact research project that involves a) vegetation surveys to characterize forest overstory structure (tree id, height and diameter) and understory composition (tree seedlings and herbaceous cover); b) measurements of long term stand microclimate using iButton data loggers and c) extracting tree cores to study how climate affects tree growth and mortality.

        • dataset_eml_methoddescription: At each site (i.e., elevation) a sampling transect with 15 points each separated by 15 meters was established parallel to the elevation contour. At each point the point-centered-quarter method was used for sapling (2.54 – 10.15cm DBH) and mature (>10.15cm DBH) living and dead individuals.

        • dataset_eml_methoddescription: Tree cores were also collected from red spruce and balsam fir trees. Cores taken from sites representing the low, middle, and high elevation range for each species on the mountain. At each site up to 5 trees were cored of each species (max of 15 trees per species per mountain). Cores were only taken from trees >20cm DBH when possible and only from healthy, dominant or codominant trees. Cores were collected parallel to the elevation contour.
